Johnson, Widerstrom Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors

MINNEAPOLIS – Two members of the Golden Gopher swimming and diving program earned Big Ten honors after impressive home-opening performances. Freshman Jacob Johnson earned his second consecutive freshman of the week honor and sophomore Elna Widerstrom was named the women's diver of the week.
Johnson had an impressive home-opener where he not only set a school record but picked up two wins along the way. He etched his name in history books by breaking the 200 fly record with a time of 1:42.41 (previous record 1:42.47). Johnson also picked up a victory in the 100 fly with a time of 46.58.
Widerstrom won both the 1 and 3 meter competition last week with a score of 284.33 (3-meter) and 305.40 (1-meter). This is the first Big Ten weekly honor of her career.
Minnesota will return to the pools on Friday, Oct. 18 to face South Dakota State and St. Thomas in a tri-meet at home.
