Minnesota Headed to NCAA Pre-Nationals in Madison

The six-race event starts with the women's 'A Race' at 10 a.m.

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota's men's and women's cross country teams are headed to Madison for the 2024 NCAA Pre-Nationals held at Zimmer Championship Course. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 19, starting at 10 a.m. 

At the six-race event Minnesota begins with the women's 'A Race' 6K at 10 a.m. The men's team will compete in the 'B Race' starting at 1:20 p.m. The race will be live streamed to both RunnerSpace and B1G+ with live results available on PTTiming.com.

An 'NCAA Championships' Type of Field
The NCAA Pre-Nationals is set to host some of the top teams in the nation, especially on the women's side. The top-5 programs will be making their way to Madison, including NAU, BYU, Washington, Notre Dame and NC State. In total, 19 ranked teams will be competing in the Women's "A" Race to kick off the day on Saturday. Five of those programs are members of the Big Ten.

Last Time Out
The University of Minnesota continued its hot start to the 2024 campaign with a third-place finish on the women's side and a 10th-place finish on the men's side at the 45th Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago, Ill., on October 4. Ali Weimer was Minnesota's top individual finisher at ninth while Noah Kohut-Jackson was the best on the men's side at 19th overall. 

Weimer Named Big Ten Athlete of the Week
Ali Weimer was been named the Big Ten's Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, the conference office announced on October 9. Additionally, Isabelle Schmitz earned the distinction of Big Ten Freshman of the Week. 

Weimer, a Saint Michael, Minn., native, was ninth overall at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational on Oct. 4. Weimer was the first Big Ten runner to cross the line at the event in a time of 19:46.8. Weimer's swift 6K time catapulted her to the No. 2 spot all-time at Minnesota at the 6K distance and was the fastest since 2021. Weimer's time slotted her ahead of Megan Hasz (19:48.9, 2021) and just behind Bethany Hasz (19:36.4, 2021). 

Schmitz, a Hutchinson, Minn., native, finished sixth among the Gophers lineup at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational, a meet in which the Gophers finished third overall as a team and ahead of No. 29 Texas and No. 10 Wisconsin. In just her second race of the season she was the highest placing Big Ten freshman at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational where she posted a lifetime best time of 20:47.2 to finish 50th overall.

In the latest USTFCCCA National Rankings the University of Minnesota's women's program sits at No. 25, moving up from receiving votes the week prior. Regionally the Maroon and Gold's women's team sits at No. 2 in the Midwest Region while the men are sixth, moving up one position. For a full look at the latest USTFCCCA rankings, click here.
