Gophers Empty Bench In Exhibition Win Over Hamline

10/29/2024 9:50:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Brennan Rigsby led Minnesota with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, Dawson Garcia added 11 points, and the Gophers jumped out to a 19-0 lead and closed the exhibition portion of their schedule with a 79-57 victory against Hamline in front of a crowd of 8,027 at Williams Arena. All 14 eligible players saw action in the win.

A transfer from the University of Oregon, Rigsby connected on 4-of-8 three-pointers and tallied 13 of his 16 points in the second half. A preseason All-Big Ten selection, Garcia made 4-of-5 field goals and grabbed five rebounds in 15 minutes, while Mike Mitchell Jr. had nine points and four assists, Trey Edmonds had nine points and a game-high seven rebounds, and Parker Fox made 4-of-4 field goals to finish with nine points. Minnesota made 31-of-61 (.508) from the field, including 11-of-27 (.407) three-pointers, and 6-of-8 free throws, while holding a 36-20 rebounding edge.

Hamline was led by Bradley Cimperman's game-high 17 points, while Raoul Vaidya had nine points, seven in the second half. The Pipers made 12-of-20 (.600) second-half field goals to finish the game at 50 percent (22-of-44), but they struggled behind the arc, where they made just 3-of-16 (.188) attempts and also at the free throw line where they were just 10-of-19 (.526).

The Gophers opened the game by scoring the first 19 points, going 7-of-7 from the field with five three-pointers, three by Mitchell Jr. Hamline responded with a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to 23-9 with 11:41 remaining in the half. Minnesota didn't miss a field goal until almost nine minutes had gone by. Lu'Cye Patterson hit a jumper and Fox added a breakaway dunk for a 27-9 advantage, but a 14-6 surge by the Pipers cut the Minnesota lead to 33-23 with 2:37 left before the break. The Gophers stretched the lead back to 16 on dunks by Grayson Grove and Garcia, and a three-pointer at the buzzer from Patterson sent Minnesota to the locker room with a 42-25 halftime lead.

Mitchell Jr. led the Gophers with nine points at the half, while Edmonds had seven points and a game-high seven boards, and Garcia had seven points and three rebounds. Cimperman paced the Pipers with eight first-half points. Minnesota finished the first half shooting 16-of-27 (.593) from the field, including 6-of-11 (.545) from three-point range, and the Gophers held an 18-7 advantage on the glass. Hamline was 10-of-24 (.417) overall, but just 2-of-11 (.182) from long-range.

Rigsby got the Gophers going in the second half by connecting on three-straight from beyond the arc, and Minnesota added dunks from Garcia and Fox (2) to extend the lead to 26 points at 55-29. Hamline scored five-straight to narrow the gap to 59-38 with 14:11 remaining, but Edmonds scored on a layup and Rigsby hit a short jumper to make it 63-38. Hamline twice cut the lead to 21, but that's as close as it would get over the final 12 minutes as Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson emptied his bench. In all, 14 players saw court time for the Gophers, with 11 players scoring points. Patterson and Isaac Asuma each scored five points for the Gophers, with Asuma recording a game-best five assists.
