MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota wrestling program has announced the signing of Charles Vanier to a scholarship agreement, head coach Brandon Eggum announced Friday.
Vanier hails from Edina, Minn., and attends Eden Prairie High School. He has twice placed at the state championships, finishing as runner-up as a junior at 139 pounds after taking third as a freshman at 106 pounds.
MatScouts rates Vanier as the No. 162 overall recruit in the class and No. 19 at 149 pounds.
"We're excited to welcome Charles to the Gopher family," Eggum said. "He's a hardworking local talent with a ton of potential and we really like his upside. We're looking forward to helping him reach new heights and make an impact on our program. "
On the national scene, Vanier won the 16U USA Wrestling State Freestyle title in 2022 at 113 pounds, then placed fifth a year later at 132 pounds. This past year, he moved up to 144 pounds and came in fourth place. Vanier competed at the prestigious Super 32 last month, reaching the Round of 16 and finishing 5-2 at 138 pounds.
Vanier has also competed in Greco-Roman, taking third place at the 2024 Northern Plains Regional and fourth at the 2024 Junior USA Wrestling State Tournament, both at 144 pounds.
Vanier becomes the second member of the Minnesota signing class, joining Evan McGuire.
