SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Three Minnesota pitchers totaled 13 strikeouts, but the Golden Gophers fell to the No. 7 Oregon State Beavers 6-4 Saturday.
Junior Tucker Novotny (0-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (1-1). Freshman Tyler Hemmesch was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing one hit, walking two and striking out three. Sophomore Caden Capomaccio made the most of his inning on the mound, striking out all three batters he faced.
Junior Brady Counsell led the way offensively for the Golden Gophers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a double and a walk. Senior Boston Merila put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Junior Jake Perry also helped out, going 2-for-5 for Minnesota with a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 6-0, the Golden Gophers first put runs on the board in the sixth inning with a sacrifice fly from Merila. Perry followed with a RBI single that scored freshman Jack Spanier in his Gopher debut.
The Golden Gophers kept the Beavers off the board before narrowing the gap further in the eighth. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Weber Neels, which tightened the Beavers lead to 6-3.
Capomaccio held the Beavers in the eighth with three straight strikeouts. The Gophers had bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth when Merila collected his second sacrifice fly of the day to make it 6-4. The late rally was not enough to overcome the No. 7-ranked Beavers.
