Gophers Defeat Boise State 5-2, Clinch Seventh Win of Season

BOISE, IDA. - The University of Minnesota tennis program picked up its seventh win of the spring and first on the road, defeating Boise State 5-2 in Boise, Ida. The Gophers improved to an overall record to 7-1 after clinching the program's first-ever win against the Broncos.

"Today, we competed well," head coach Lois Arterberry said. "A lot of fight from the Gophers. Our women were hungry, especially after dropping the doubles point two days in a row. We knew this was going to be a close match today, and we had to want it more. We've raised our level of tennis over the past couple of weeks, and we will continue to compete and get better."
Match Highlights
The doubles point went to Boise State in a tight contest. The Broncos struck first in the No. 2 spot with a 6-2 win. No. 3 Gopher pair Zeyneb Sarioglan and Sofia Pizzoni evened out the round with a 6-4 win over Ryan Kershner and Bhakti Shah. No. 1 Emma Belluomini and Anali Kocevar kept it close until the end, falling 6(2)-7(7) to Nicole Discenza and Lorelyz Marruffo.
In singles, the Gophers won five straight to clinch an overall victory. After spot No. 5 went to Boise State, Minnesota's Sofia Pizzoni defeated Ana Conde Vendrell 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6. Emma Belluomini evened out the score with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ari Briones Ginesta in the No. 4 spot, while No. 1 Anali Kocevar got the Gophers their first lead of the day. No. 3 Aiva Schmitz secured the match for the Maroon and Gold after defeating Shauna Heffernan 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
