Gophers Get Two Podium Finishes on Opening Night of Big Tens

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota women's swimming and diving team opened the Big Ten Championships with a pair of podium finishes on Wednesday evening in West Lafayette, Ind.

The night began with the 200 medley relay, spearheaded by backstroker Paula Rodriguez Rivero with a 50-yard split of 24.87. Ava Goodno followed with a 50-yard breaststroke split of 28.12 before Morgan Thomas swam a 50-yard fly in 23.10. Hannah Cornish anchored the relay with a 50-yard split of 21.97, giving the Gophers a sixth-place finish with a time of 1:38.06.

The 800-free relay team swam next, also touching the wall in sixth place with a time of 7:10.32. Megan Van Berkom led off the team, followed by sisters Mina and Anja Kaljevic. Freshman Morgan Thomas swam her second race of the day, anchoring the team.

With 96 points after the first day, Minnesota sits in sixth place. Indiana holds a two-point edge over Ohio State, 118-116, while Michigan is in third place with 112 points.

Thursday's schedule includes preliminary and finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 1-meter diving. The evening session will also include the 400 medley relay.
