Five Gophers set new personal bests

MINNEAPOLIS - Two Golden Gopher women achieved medals on night two of the Women's Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday at Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center in West Lafayette, Ind.

Senior Megan Van Berkom placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.88 to finish on the podium. Freshman Elna Widerstrom placed third in the 1-meter dive, securing her first-ever podium finish as a Gopher, with a score of 304.90.

Five Gophers set new personal records for the day between the preliminary round this morning and final round this evening. Freshman Katie McCarthy swam a 4:43.47 in the 500 free prelims to set a new PR before breaking that record in the finals with a time of 4:41.82, finishing 13th. Both times were good enough to hit the NCAA 'B' cut.

Grace Drabot and Claire Reinke both set new personal bests in the 200 IM prelims. Drabot swam a 2:00.02 which got her to the C final, while Reinke swam a 2:01.11.

Hannah Cornish and Morgan Thomas both advanced to the B final in the 50 free. Cornish had her best time of the day in the preliminary session, swimming an NCAA 'B' cut time of 22.57. Thomas also hit the NCAA 'B' cut in the prelims, setting a new personal record with a time of 22.46. Fellow 50-freestyler Mina Kaljevic swam a new personal best in the 50 free prelims with a time of 23.00.

Sophomore Vivi Del Angel joined Widerstrom in the final round of the 1-meter diving competition, finishing eighth with a score of 287.45.

The 400 medley relay team of Paula Rodriguez Rivero, Van Berkom, Reinke and Cornish finished on the podium for the second night in a row. The team clocked in at 3:34.33 which was good for fourth place.

After two days of competition, Minnesota sits in fifth place as a team. Ohio State leads the pack, followed by Michigan, Indiana and Wisconsin.

Day three at Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center will feature the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter dive and 200 free relay. The prelims begin at 9:00 a.m. CT with finals scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT.
