Megan Van Berkom Swims to Big Ten Championship Title

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota Golden Gophers senior Megan Van Berkom earned a Big Ten title in the 400 IM (4:06.71) on day three of the Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
In total, the Gophers had five podium finishes, including two medals. Sophomore Vivi Del Angel earned a third-place finish in the 3-meter (344.60) to give Minnesota their second medal of the day and fourth of the championships.
Claire Reinke made it to the A final in the 100 fly, finishing seventh with a time of 53.22. Ava Yablonski and Morgan Thomas each made it to the C final in the event, swimming 53.90 and 54.04, respectively.
Katie McCarthy swam a new personal best in the 400 IM (4:12.51) prelims before finishing 13th in the finals. Grace Drabot had a career day in the 400 IM, setting a new personal record and finishing 18th in the C final with a time of 4:13.08.
Mina Kaljevic represented the Gophers in the 200 free final, placing 15th with a time of 1:47.55.
Hannah Cornish and Ava Goodno both set personal bests in the 100 breaststroke. Cornish finished ninth with a time of 1:01.13, while Goodno placed 17th with a 1:01.67.
All four of Minnesota's 100 backstrokers advanced to the finals on Friday night. Senior Paula Rodriguez Rivero placed sixth in the event with a personal-best time of 52.74. Faith Johnson (53.64) and Indy Jongman (53.85) each made the B final in the 100 back after swimming personal bests. The pair finished 11th and 15th, respectively. Ava Yablonski was the final Gopher to make the 100 back finals, placing 18th with a time of 53.93.
In addition to Vivi Del Angel, Elna Widerstrom finished on the podium for the second-straight night. Her 3-meter dive score of 336.35 was good for fifth place.
The women capped off the night with a sixth-place podium finish in the 200 free relay. The team of Cornish, Thomas, M. Kaljevic and Jongman touched the wall in 1:30.55.
Three days into the championships, the 'U' still sits in fifth place overall. Ohio State paces the group with Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin following.
The final day of competition at Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center will feature the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, 1650 free, 400 free relay and platform dive. The preliminary session begins at 9:00 a.m. with finals to follow at 4:00 p.m.
