Vetter Shuts Door on Bulldogs in Shootout to Earn Extra Point
2/23/2024 9:33:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's hockey team battled into overtime and then a shootout before earning an extra point in the standings on Friday night.
Junior goaltender Skylar Vetter stopped all three Bulldog attempts in the shootout, while junior Ella Huber scored the first and only goal out of all six attempts.
Vetter stopped 26 Bulldog shots in regulation and overtime, allowing just one goal.
Minnesota Duluth struck first, as the Bulldogs scored just over 13 minutes into the period. That proved the lone goal in the opening frame, and the Gophers went back to the locker room in a one-goal deficit.
Redshirt junior Abbey Murphy scored her 30th goal of the season – 50th point – as she buried a bouncing puck in the first period to tie the contest up. A truly remarkable feat, Murphy now sits at 187 career points with one game left in the 2023-24 regular season.
The Gophers and Bulldogs battled through the final frame, with neither team yielding in a tightly-contested contest. Regulation and an overtime period proved not enough time, as the game went to a shootout.
