Golden Gophers Go Undefeated Over the Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS – The 'U' was victorious over each of their competitors this weekend. The men took down Purdue and Northwestern while the women added a win over Iowa in addition to the Boilermakers and Wildcats. 

Nine Minnesota Gophers collected NCAA 'B' cuts on day two of the Purdue Quad Meet at  Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center. 

Similar to day one, the Gophers opened the meet with relay victories on both the men's and women's teams. Morgan Thomas, Hannah Cornish, Mina Kaljevic and Ava Yablonski touched the wall at 1:30.76 in the 200 freestyle relay to secure the win. 

The men's team of Davide Harabagiu, Kaiser Neverman, Connor Groya and Lovro Serdarevic finished the 200 freestyle relay in 1:18.60 for first. Teammates Omar Abdelwahab, Casey Stowe, Tommy McCarthy and Matt McDonald combined for a second-place finish with a time of 1:19.68 to give Minnesota the top two spots.

Senior Megan Van Berkom collected her third NCAA 'B' cut of the two-day meet when she won the 400 IM with a time of 4:10.35. Her counterpart, senior William Christenson, won the men's 400 IM and secured a 'B' cut with a time of 3:47.20.

Two Minnesota women reached the podium in the 100 free with Hannah Cornish finishing second (49.44) and Mina Kaljevic placing third (49.81). Senior Kaiser Neverman grabbed the top spot and a 'B' cut (43.17) in the men's 100 free with teammate Connor Groya snatching third place (44.64) to give the Gophers two podium finishes.

Paula Rodriguez Rivero swam her second NCAA 'B' cut of the meet in the 200 back, finishing in second place with a time of 1:55.85. In the men's race, Dez Sachtjen finished second with a time of 1:44.92.

Two Gopher rookies were victorious with 'B' cut times in the 100 fly. Morgan Thomas (53.12) won the women's race and Davide Harabagiu (46.03) claimed the top spot in the men's race.

Junior Eliot Kennedy (4:44.15) clocked a 'B' cut time with a first-place finish in the 500 free. After breaking a school record yesterday in the 1000 free, fellow junior Bar Soloveychik won the men's 500 free with a 'B' cut time of 4:16.90. William Christenson also finished on the podium in third with a time of 4:25.56 in the event.

In the women's 200 breaststroke, Ava Gustafson swam her way to a third-place finish with a time of 2:15.25. Joe Rudd touched the wall in 1:57.32 to finish second in the men's 200 breaststroke and secure a 'B' cut.

The Gophers finished the meet strong with victories in both the men's and women's 400 freestyle relays. Thomas, Cornish, M. Kaljevic and Yablonski clocked in at 3:18.13 for first. The men's team of Harabagiu, Neverman, Stowe and Groya finished in 2:53.88 for the win.

In the diving well, Vivi Del Angel had her best platform performance of the year, scoring 338.70 to take first. Teammate Kate LaMonica had a qualifying score of 250.60, which was good for fourth place. On the men's side, Drew Bennett finished in the top three with a score of 388.25. 

The Minnesota swimming and diving teams will be back in action on Feb. 9 and 10 at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center for the First Chance Meet.
