Two Home Runs Aren't Enough for Gophers to Take Down Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Two home runs were not enough for Minnesota on Friday, as the Gophers plated five runs, but could not hold the Sacramento State Hornets at bay, and were bested 7-5.
Junior Will Semb (1-1) started and took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (2-5). Senior Justin Thorsteinson went 2.2 innings in relief, surrendering one run on two hits, walking one and striking out three.
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were once again led by junior Jake Perry, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Brady Counsell added a three-run homer for the 'U'.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers were trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning when Perry left the yard with senior Brady Jurgella aboard to tie the game at two.
The Hornets broke the tie and re-took a 6-2 lead heading into the fifth inning, but Brady Counsell answered with a three-run home run to come within one. Sacramento State added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the 7-5 win.
GAME NOTES
» Perry and Counsell each hit their first home runs of the season and the fourth for the Gophers this year.
» Minnesota pitching struck out 11 batters.
» Perry and Ike Mezzenga both extended their on-base streak to seven games.
» Sacramento State was led offensively by sophomore JP Smith, who went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.
