Four Gophers Clinch Spot to NCAAs on Day One of Zone Diving

HOUSTON, Texas - Four members of the University of Minnesota diving team punched their tickets to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Monday on day one of the Zone D Diving Championships.
Freshman YuTong Wang earned his spot in the men's 3-meter. Freshman Elna Widerstrom, along with sophomores Vivi Del Angel and Addie Albrecht all qualified on the women's 1-meter.
Wang was fourth through the prelims following a score of 378.70 in the . He made a big jump in the finals, scoring 429.4 to propel him to a second place finish overall.
Widerstrom and Del Angel were neck-and-neck in the prelims of the women's 1-meter, with Del Angel finishing fourth (309.35) and Widerstrom placing fifth (306.60). Albrecht finished just behind them in eighth with a score of 295.45.
Del Angel improved her score to 313.60 in the finals, guiding her to a third-place finish overall. Widerstrom scored a 298.45 in the final round, good for sixth place. Albrecht rounded out her night with a 270.75 in the finals, placing 11th.
Senior Av Osero scored a 271.95 in the 1-meter prelims for the women, while counterpart Drew Bennett dove to a 327.30 in the 3-meter for the men.
The Zone Diving Championships continue Tuesday with the women on the 3-meter and the men moving to the 1-meter. All seven Gophers will be competing on day two.
