Bennett Wins Platform at Zone Championships

HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore Drew Bennett won the men's platform, while Vivi Del Angel placed third on the women's platform at the Zone Diving Championships on Wednesday.
Bennet began with a preliminary round score of 381.30 on the tower, placing third. The Madison, Wis. native improved in the final round, scoring a 390.20 to propel him to victory. With the win, Bennett is now eligible to compete on both the platform and the 1-meter after a 12th-place finish yesterday.
Del Angel clinched a spot in her third event with a third-place finish on the platform. She scored a 310.20 in the prelims, followed by a 316.00 in the finals to secure a spot in another event at the NCAA Championships. Del Angel qualified in the 1-meter on Monday and the 3-meter on Tuesday.
Teammate Kate LaMonica advanced to the finals after placing ninth with a score of 250.00 in the prelims. With a finals score of 224.05, she finished in 14th, just out of qualifying contention.
In total for the week, five Minnesota divers qualified for nationals. The 'U' will have representatives in all three dives for both men and women. Del Angel was the only Gopher to qualify in three events. Bennett, Elna Widerstrom and YuTong Wang all qualified for two events, while Addie Albrecht qualified for one.
Combined with swimmers, the men's team will send 10 student-athletes to the national meet with the women sending six.
The 2024 Women's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will take place from Mar. 20-23 at Jack Bauerle Pool in Athens, Ga. The men's championships will be held the following week, Mar. 27-30, at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
