Miller named regional Assistant Coach of the Year, Nabwe named Big Ten's Freshman of the Year.
MINNEAPOLIS - Redshirt freshman Anthonett Nabwe was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Year, while Associate Head Coach Peter Miller was named the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Assistant Coach of the Year, the Big Ten and the USTFCCCA announced on Thursday. Miller coached Nabwe to the Big Ten title in the weight throw and followed that up with a Second Team All-America finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 7 in Boston, Mass.Â
Nabwe is the first Gopher to earn the indoor Freshman of the Year honor since 2020 when Janielle Josephs was tabbed as the top rookie. The Jamestown, N.D., native is the first thrower at the 'U' to earn the conference Freshman of the Year honor since Liz Podominick in 2005 during the outdoor season. During the indoor campaign Nabwe set an NCAA freshman record in the weight throw in her victory at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Nabwe's throw of 23.36m (76-7 3/4) came on the redshirt freshman's third throw and made her the first freshman to win the Big Ten weight throw title since Dani Bunch (Purdue) in 2011. Just a few weeks later Nabwe made her debut at the NCAA Indoor Championships where she finished as a Second Team All-American with a throw of 20.08m (65-10 1/2).Â
For Miller, the regional honor is his sixth of his career in his 11th season at the 'U'. Miller has cemented himself as the premier throws coach in the region, and also nationally, as the former Gopher thrower has coached at least one All-American in a throwing event on either the men's or women's side in all 11 seasons as a coach at Minnesota. Miller not only coached Nabwe to success in 2024, but also aided Shelby Frank's NCAA runner-up finish in the weight throw. Under Miller, Frank became the first Gopher to post back-to-back NCAA silver medalist finishes in program history in the weight throw. With the help of Miller's coaching, Nabwe improved from 17.85m (58-6 3/4) as a true freshman in the weight throw to a record 23.36m (76-7 3/4), a difference of 5.51m (18-1). Nabwe was also an effective thrower in the shot put this season, putting forth a mark of 16.47m (54--0 1/2) during this indoor season, a mark that has her sixth all-time in program history. Nabwe's 23.36m weight throw mark is third all-time at Minnesota.Â
