No. 72 Minnesota Set to Face No. 25 Wisconsin in Madison

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program will hit the road for its third conference matchup of the season, heading to Madison, Wisc. to face the No. 25-ranked University of Wisconsin. The Gophers (9-5, 2-0 Big Ten) will face the Badgers (10-2, 2-0 Big Ten) on Mar. 16 at 12:00 p.m. CT at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.

The Season So Far
Last weekend, the Gophers opened up conference play with back-to-back wins over Indiana and Purdue on the road. Minnesota defeated Indiana 4-3 in a thrilling tiebreak set, notching a Maroon and Gold victory in their first Big Ten match of the season. The Gophers then took down the then-No. 48 Purdue Boilermakers in a 4-1 match. This marked the first Minnesota women's tennis victory over a Top 50-ranked team since Feb. 2023.

Following their stellar conference opening, the Gophers claimed the No. 72 spot in the ITA team rankings on Mar. 12. Minnesota sophomore Aiva Schmitz was selected as Co-Big Ten Player of the Week for her performance over the weekend, as she secured the winning point for the Gophers in both matches from the No. 3 singles spot.

Through the seven Minnesota student-athletes that have seen official dual-match action this season, the Maroon and Gold are 59-23 in singles and 38-34 in doubles.

Wisconsin is coming off a 4-1 victory over Indiana on the road. The Badgers hold a 10-2 overall record on the season and are tied with the Gophers for first in the Big Ten with a 2-0 conference record. Wisconsin holds an ITA team ranking of No. 25, with sophomore Maria Sholokhova holding a No. 69 ITA singles ranking.

The last time the Gophers and the Badgers squared off was on Mar. 3, 2023. The then-No. 12 Wisconsin won the match 4-0 at Baseline Tennis Center.
