Gopher Tennis Set to Face Nebraska, No. 62 Iowa at Home

MINNEAPOLIS - After a bye week, the University of Minnesota tennis program is set to host its first two home Big Ten matches of the season this weekend. On Friday, Mar. 29, the Gophers will take on Nebraska at 4:00 p.m. CT. Then, on Sunday, Mar. 31, Minnesota will face No. 62 Iowa at 12:00 p.m. CT.
The Maroon and Gold return to Baseline Tennis Center for the first time since Mar. 3 after playing their last four matches on the road.
The Season So Far
On Mar. 16, the Gophers took on the then-No. 25 ranked University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisc., falling in the 7-0 match. Minnesota holds a 2-1 Big Ten conference record and a 9-6 overall record.
Gopher sophomore Aiva Schmitz leads the team with 12 singles wins this season. She earned Co-Big Ten Player of the Week on Mar. 13 for her performances against Indiana and Purdue.
Minnesota doubles duo Sofia Pizzoni and Aiva Schmitz holds a 5-1 record together, only falling for the first time against Wisconsin on Mar. 16.
The Competition
Nebraska has a 9-6 overall record and an 0-4 conference record. They are coming off their fifth-straight loss of the season, falling to then-No. 34 Illinois in a 4-1 match at home. The Cornhuskers boost two ITA-ranked doubles pairs: No. 61 Raphaelle Lacasse and Isabel Adrover, and No. 75 Ana Carmen Zamburek and Anfisa Danilchenko.
Iowa is 8-7 overall and 3-1 in conference play, coming off a 4-1 loss against No. 35 Northwestern. The Hawkeyes moved up to No. 62 in this week's ITA team rankings. Sophomore Daianne Hayashida holds the No. 122 spot in the ITA singles rankings.
