Minnesota Notches Thrilling Win Over Indiana in Big Ten Season Debut

3/9/2024 4:51:00 PM | Tennis

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The University of Minnesota tennis program saw an exciting open to conference play, notching a 4-3 victory over Indiana University on the road. Golden Gopher head coach Lois Arterberry starts her Big Ten coaching career 1-0 as the Maroon and Gold moves to an 8-5 overall record.

Quote from Coach Arterberry
"I'm so proud of the way the girls competed today," said head coach Lois Arterberry. "As a team, we stepped up and fought together. When one player was down, the other player pulled them up. That's what it's about. We are getting one percent better every day and learning lessons after every match. The recent close matches we didn't get will motivate us in our Big Ten play, and I'm excited to see how we continue to grow together."

Match Highlights
Indiana put the first point on the board after winning the doubles round. The Hoosiers struck first in the No. 1 spot when Lara Schneider and Nicole Teodosescu defeated Sofia Pinto and Sofia Pizzoni 6-1. The Gophers brought the round to a tie when No. 2 pair Emma Belluomini and Mia Liepert won 6-2. Indiana would claim the point after winning a tiebreak set in the No. 3 spot.

The Gophers would battle back in the singles round, going 4-2 to win the overall match. The Hoosiers again struck first, with No. 5 Magda Swierczynska defeating Sofia Pinto (MINN) 6-3, 6-1. No. 2 Anali Kocevar would get Minnesota on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
