Gophers Travel to Face No. 58 Maryland, Rutgers in Final Regular Season Matches

MINNEAPOLIS - This weekend, the University of Minnesota tennis program will play its final two matches of the regular season. On Friday, Apr. 19, the Gophers will take on No. 58 Maryland at 2:00 p.m. CT in College Park, MD. Then, on Sunday, Apr. 21, Minnesota will face Rutgers at 11:00 a.m. CT in Piscataway, N.J.
 
The Season So Far
Minnesota holds a 4-5 Big Ten conference record and an 11-10 overall record.
 
Last weekend, the Gophers hosted Michigan State and No. 2 Michigan. Minnesota defeated Michigan State 4-2 on Friday, Apr. 12 at Baseline Tennis Center. The match was clinched after Mia Liepert defeated Matilde Morais at the No. 1 singles spot. On Sunday, Apr. 14, the Gophers fell to No. 2 Michigan in a 6-1 match at home.
 
Gopher Team Leaders
Gopher sophomore Aiva Schmitz leads the team with 15 singles wins this season. She earned Big Ten Player of the Week on Mar. 13 for her performances against Indiana and Purdue, and has clinched the winning point in all three of Minnesota's conference victories.
 
Sophomore Sofia Pizzoni leads the team with 8 doubles wins with various partners. She and partner Sofia Pinto have notched a team-high of 5 wins as a doubles pair.
 
The Competition
Maryland has a 14-9 overall record and is 4-5 against Big Ten conference opponents. The Terrapins are coming off a 4-0 win against George Mason on April 13. Graduate student Selma Cadar is ranked #70 in the ITA singles rankings and won Big Ten Player of the Week on Mar. 6. Doubles pair Minorka Miranda and Maria Budin are ranked #61 in the ITA doubles rankings.
 
Rutgers is 10-10 overall and 1-8 in conference play, coming off a 4-1 loss against Maryland. The Scarlet Knights' sole conference win came against Michigan State in a 4-0 match on Mar. 22.
