11 meet records and 13 titles for Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS – The Golden Gophers track and field program set 11 meet records and won 13 event titles Wednesday as they hosted the 2024 Gary Wilson Invitational from the University of Minnesota Track and Field Stadium.

Minnesota tallied 18 personal bests as the entire roster put on a show in front of its home fans during the lone home meet of the outdoor campaign. The Gophers welcomed student-athletes from 28 other institutions on a bright, sunny day in Dinkytown.

It was a huge personal best from Shelby Frank in the hammer throw that got the day started for the Maroon and Gold. She tallied the second-best performance in program history to win the event with a meet and stadium record of 67.94m (222-10). Right behind her was teammate Anthonett Nabwe, who posted a lifetime best of 63.34m (207-9), the sixth-best throw ever for the Gophers.

Nabwe carried her incredible afternoon into the No. 2 spot all-time for Minnesota during the shot put as she registered a throw of 17.00m (55-9.25). Her event win was the 23rd-best mark in the NCAA this spring to set a new personal best. Frank later tallied her second victory of the day, this time claiming the top spot in the discus behind a mark of 55.05m (180-7). Hadley Streit joined the fun for the women's throwers as she tallied PR's in both the hammer throw and discus, placing third and fifth, respectively.

The men finished with the top three efforts in the hammer throw as Carter Hughes had the best throw among attached athletes at 59.03m (193-8). Competing unattached in the event were a pair of Gophers, Kostas Zaltos and Isaiah Schafer that placed first and second, respectively, with Zaltos breaking both the meet and stadium record behind his mark of 73.29m (240-5).

In the pole vault, it was Sofia Condon that registered a career best of 4.08m (13-4.5) to break the meet record with the No. 9 all-time effort for Minnesota and moved up to ninth in the Big Ten Conference to win the event. Alexys Berger was close behind in third as she cleared 3.93m (12-10.75).

On the track, Maja Maunsbach set a new meet record in the 100m hurdles as she covered the distance in 13.42 seconds for the fastest time of the preliminary round and matched the exact time in the finals to win the event. It was a similar effort on the men's side with the Maroon and Gold sprinting to the top two positions with Michael Buchanan (unattached) and Christian Martin finishing first and second in times of 13.88 seconds and 14.01 seconds, respectively. Buchanan broke his own meet record in the process.

Records continued to fall at the effort of the Gophers as the women broke the meet's previous best in their next three events. Brooke Jaworski built an insurmountable lead in the 800m and turned in a first-place finish of 2:07.49, setting a new meet record, with Zoie Dundon on her heels in second, crossing the finish line in 2:08.67. Sydney Kretlow made it three in the top 10 as her personal-best time of 2:13.13 placed ninth overall. Dyandra Gray raced to an invite record in the women's 400m hurdles behind a winning time and personal best of 1:00.12. It was Leo Goodman in the very next race that followed suit as he claimed a victory in the men's 1,500m, setting a lifetime best and meet record at 3:45.42.

Erin Reidy joined the winning ways for Minnesota during the women's 1,500m, dominating the field on her way to the No. 3 time in program history for an event title in 4:16.51. After shattering the meet and stadium record, she celebrated with Coach Sarah Hopkins upon seeing the official result on the videoboard with her time nearly five seconds ahead of her previous best.

The Gophers did not stop there as a trio in the 3,000m steeplechase all turned in top-7 performances, led by Taylor Kreitinger's event title and meet record time at 10:31.39. Lila Branchaw finished third with a personal-best time of 10:48.89, while Anna Lien was seventh in 11:02.80.

Minnesota continues its outdoor season April 25 as they compete in the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa, as well as at the Janis Rider/Doug Bolstorff Invitational hosted by Macalester in St. Paul, Minn. The Maroon and Gold also have student-athletes traveling to Arizona for the Desert Heat Classic Saturday in Tucson, Ariz.
