Minnesota Comes up Short Against Michigan State

MINNEAPOLIS -- Drew Berkland had a career day driving in three runs, but the Minnesota Golden Gophers still came up short on Friday, falling to the Michigan State Spartans by a final of 6-4.
Senior Justin Thorsteinson (3-3) took the loss on the mound for Minnesota (21-22, 7-12).
In the batter's box, the Gophers were led by Berkland, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Josh Fitzgerald collected two hits on the day, his tenth multi-hit game of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'U' got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the bottom the first inning when Counsell came around on a groundout by Weber Neels.
The Spartans then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Gophers got back on the board in the fourth. Minnesota scored twice on Berkland's two-run homer, which gave them a 3-2 lead.
Minnesota's lead had disappeared by the time the eighth inning arrived and turned into a 6-3 Michigan State advantage. The Gophers picked up one more run in the bottom of the eighth from an RBI by Berkland, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Spartans.
