Frank, Mantzouranis win gold in hammer throw

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Highlighted by hammer throw victories from Shelby Frank and Angelos Mantzouranis, the Minnesota track and field program closed Friday's opening day of the 2024 Big Ten Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The Golden Gophers claimed team points for both the men's and women's teams in the first three field events in which they competed, totaling 15 in the women's hammer throw, 10 in the men's hammer throw, and five during the women's pole vault.

When the action turned to the track, Minnesota had student-athletes advance past the preliminary round of the 400m hurdles, 200m, and 1,500m at U-M Track and Field Stadium on the campus of the University of Michigan.

The Maroon and Gold picked up a huge 15 team points to get the day started thanks to a B1G championship in the hammer throw from Frank. The junior had the two best marks overall as her effort of 67.79m (222-5) won the event, the first outdoor title of her career. Anthonett Nabwe also reached the finals and the freshman placed fourth as her best throw came in round five at 65.22m (214-0).

The Gophers added to their early lead in the team standings when Lexy Berger cleared 4.22m (13-10) during the pole vault competition to finish fourth. The senior cleared her first five heights in two attempts or fewer before ending the event on the podium.

In its first event on the track, Minnesota advanced a pair of runners in the 400m hurdles as Abigail Schaaffe and Dyandra Gray placed eighth and ninth, respectively. Schaaffe covered the distance in 1:00.31, while Gray finished in 1:00.56, edging out an Ohio State runner by .004 seconds to move on.

Odell Frye and Victory Godah joined their Gophers' teammates in reaching an event final as the two sprinters placed fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200m. Frye crossed the finish line in 23.41 seconds and Godah set a new personal best with a time of 23.44 seconds, setting up for the finals on Sunday.

It was a strong push over the final lap from Erin Reidy that helped the junior post the fastest preliminary time in the 1,500m by just .02 seconds. She won her heat in 4:20.55 and is one of 12 that advanced into the finals of the event, which is set to take place Sunday at noon.

Through four events in the heptathlon, Minnesota's Autumn Glover sits in third place with 3,208 points after she posted second-place efforts in both the 100m hurdles and high jump. The final three disciples will determine the champion on Saturday.

Minnesota Men's Track and Field
Angelos Mantzouranis opened the day for the Maroon and Gold men's team with a brilliant performance and set a meet record in the process during the hammer throw. The freshman dominated the field, winning by more than seven meters over second place, as he turned in a mark of 75.15m (246-6) on his second throw of the event.

On the track, Ahmed Khadar battled to the finish line of the 400m hurdles and the freshman's personal-best time of 52.21 seconds was enough to qualify him for the event finals that will take place Sunday afternoon.

The Gophers are sending another runner into the finals after Devin Augustine won his heat during Friday's 200m prelims. The junior sprinted to a time of 20.86 seconds and was firmly in control of the race when he eased up to cross the finish.

Eli Hoeft took advantage of his spot in the opening heat of the 1,500m. He placed second among the 11 runners, earning a spot in the finals, ending the race in 3:56.58.
