Dundon, Godfred win event titles for the 'U'

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Minnesota claimed two more conference titles and one school record on Saturday during day two at the 2024 Big Ten Conference Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

It was cool, windy, and overcast to start the day on the campus of the University of Michigan with rain settling in to begin the track events in the late afternoon before the sun finally made an appearance. That did not stop the Golden Gophers from putting up impressive performances from the entire team.

Zoie Dundon capped the day for the Maroon and Gold women in dominating fashion as she raced to a B1G championship in the 3000m steeplechase. Charles Godfred continued his electric freshman campaign and leaped past the field on his way to a title in the men's long jump. Meanwhile, Anthonett Nabwe broke a school record on her way to a silver medal in the shot put, helping the women to third place in the team standings with one day of action remaining.

Minnesota Women's Track and Field
After closing day one in third place in the heptathlon, the Gophers' Autumn Glover held onto a podium finish as she was third overall and picked up six team points. She opened the competition Saturday morning by winning the long jump with a leap of 5.93m. Following a fifth-place result in the javelin throw, the junior moved up into the first position heading into the final event. Competing back in her home state, Glover placed fifth in the 800m, earning a bronze medal behind a personal-best score of 5,377, which ranks fifth in program history.

Thanks to successfully clearing 1.70m (5-7) during the high jump, Alliyah McNeil tacked on three team points for the Maroon and Gold as she finished in sixth place.

In her final throw of the shot put prelims, Nabwe delivered a record-breaking performance of 17.43m (57-2.25). That effort vaulted her into second place and passed Minnesota's previous record holder, Tess Keyzers from 2019, by more than six inches. The redshirt freshman added to her team point total, giving the Gophers eight more points after posting five in Friday's hammer throw.

When attention turned to the track, the Gophers advanced a pair of sprinters in the 400m preliminary round. Janielle Josephs and Jayla Campbell ran 53.97 and 54.40, respectively, to finish as the top two during the fourth and final heat and are part of the nine student-athletes that reached Sunday's finals.

Minnesota continued to showcase its speed on the track as two more pushed into finals as Odell Frye and Victory Godah qualified through Saturday's 100m prelims. Frye won the final heat with the top overall time at 11.34 seconds, while Godah was third in the opening race and her time of 11.53 tied her personal best and earned a spot in the finals.

Both Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black joined the group representing the Maroon and Gold to reach tomorrow's finals thanks to remarkable efforts during the 100m hurdles. Maunsbach covered the distance in 13.37 seconds to place fourth overall in the prelims before Black was seventh in 13.49.

In the first heat of the 800m, Brooke Jaworski finished second and her effort of 2:07.11 also sent her into the finals.

The final event of the day for the Gophers women was paved in Maroon and Gold with Dundon dominating the field, picking up a conference championship. She cruised to the finish behind a time of 10:09.56, winning by more than 12 seconds, and Taylor Kreitinger placed fifth in 10:28.37, making it 14 team points in the event. Lila Branchaw set a personal record at 10:44.90 and made it three from Minnesota in the top nine.

Minnesota Men's Track and Field
The first Gopher to compete for the men Saturday came when Ramy Ayoub took to the track for the preliminary round of the 400m. The sophomore placed third in his heat at 47.40 seconds and the time earned him one of nine spots in the finals set for Sunday afternoon.

Having already set a school record in the 100m earlier this season, Devin Augustine entered the day as the top seed and did not disappoint. The two-time Big Ten Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week this outdoor season dashed past the field during the prelims and won his heat in a time of 10.39 seconds.

Minnesota will see another runner compete for a conference championship Sunday after Christian Martin raced the 110m hurdles. He sprinted to a time of 14.00 seconds and was sixth overall during the prelims.

Elite athleticism was on full display for the Gophers during the long jump competition thanks to the freshman Godfred. After posting the top effort of the prelims at 7.70m, he launched past that mark in his fourth attempt and leaped 7.94m (26-0.75), claiming an event title.
