MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Ben Warian carded a 5-under 65, placing him in a five-way tie for second-place after the first round of the Stanford Regional in Stanford, Calif, on Monday.

Warian started the day off hot, tallying a birdie on three of his first six holes. He finished off the front nine with a five-under 30. His back nine was steady as he bogeyed the par-four 12th hole, but finished his round with a birdie on the 18th to keep him at 5-under par.

Big Ten rival Illinois leads the team competition after the first 18 holes with an overall score of 17-under par, followed by Florida State (-13), Stanford (-11) and Ole Miss and Texas A&M (both -9). The Ilini's own Max Herendeen holds the top individual spot after collecting a seven-under 63.

The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams, which is currently Warian, from each regional will advance to the finals.

Warian will begin his second round of the Stanford Regional Tuesday on Hole no. 1 at 11:04 am CT.
