MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota senior Ben Warian posted a five-under 65 in the final round of the Stanford regional Wednesday to secure a spot in the NCAA Division I Championships.

Warian's final round of 65 placed him in a three-way tie for the second individual spot at 11-under par (65-69-65–199).

For the third consecutive round, Warian began his round by posting a birdie on the par-5 first hole. There was no slowing him down, as he finished the front nine at 4-under par.

Warian started the back nine with two consecutive bogeys, but quickly bounced back, rattling off three consecutive birdies on holes 15, 16, and 17.

"Super proud of Ben and his performance this week," Gophers head coach Justin Smith said. "There is no question he can compete with anyone and he proved it this week. It is going to be so exciting to see him compete at the NCAA Championship at Omni La Costa."

The Gopher senior led the entire field in par-3 scoring, playing them at 4-under par for the tournament. He also finished tied for second in par-5 scoring, playing the par five holes at 8-under par. Warian collected the third most birdies in the field, carding 16 through the 54-hole tournament.

His 54-hole score of 199 ranks second in program history, only second to his own record of 198 he set in his victory at the High Meadows Intercollegiate just last month.

"It was a fun round and a great tournament overall," said Warian. "Excited to be moving on to the NCAA Championships. This is what it is all about."

This is Warian's first time advancing to the NCAA Championships, and the first time a member of the Maroon and Gold has advanced to the NCAA Championships since the team qualified in 2007. The last Gopher to reach the championships as an individual was Rob Kerr in 1996.

Big Ten rival Illinois garnered the team title with a combined score of 36-under par (263-270-271–804), with the Illini's own Max Herendeen claiming the individual title with a score of 13-under par (63-68-66–197).

The top five teams advancing to the national championship alongside Warian were Illinois, Florida State, Texas A&M, SMU and host-Stanford.
