Bingle, Augustine Pick Up B1G Championship Honors

5/15/2024 1:00:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The Big Ten Conference announced its championship awards Wednesday with the University of Minnesota represented by Matt Bingle, the 2024 B1G Women's Coach of the Year, and Devin Augustine as the B1G Men's Track Athlete of the Championships. Lexy Berger and Finn Schirmer were chosen as the B1G Sportsmanship Award winners for 2024.

The Golden Gophers have won three of their four women's outdoor conference titles under the guidance of Bingle, Minnesota's Director of Track and Field, who oversees both the men's and women's programs. This is the ninth time he has been honored by the Big Ten as Women's Coach of the Year, including now three during outdoor seasons. The Maroon and Gold claimed three event titles in Ann Arbor, Mich., on the way to the 2024 team championship. More importantly, the entire roster contributed as 18 different student-athletes recorded at least one team point across 16 of the 21 total events scored.

Augustine became the sixth Gopher in program history to earn the title of Men's Track Athlete of the Championships and second straight after Matthew Wilkinson was the winner in 2023. A native of Point Fortin, Trinidad & Tobago, he accounted for 17.5 team points at the end of the weekend, walking away from the championship meet with three medals. Augustine dominated the field during a 100m victory where he tied the meet record in a time of 10.05 seconds. The junior still holds the NCAA West Region's No. 1 performance in the 100m and No. 5 nationally behind his school-record time of 10.02 seconds. He added a third-place finish in the 200m and helped drive the Gophers to a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay.

Berger was given the B1G Sportsmanship Award following a podium finish in the women's pole vault last weekend. The redshirt senior from Rosemount, Minn., cleared 4.22m (13-10) to place fourth and help the Maroon and Gold secure the conference team championship. She has competed seven times during this outdoor campaign and never finished lower than seventh, including four top-three performances. In 2022, Berger was the pole vault silver medalist at the outdoor championships, which landed her a spot on the All-B1G Second Team.

Schirmer was the men's recipient of the B1G Sportsmanship Award for 2024. He ran a key leg for the Gophers during their third-place result as a part of the 4x100m relay Sunday and placed in the top 25 of both the 100m and 200m at the championships. The Marengo, Ill., native has run multiple events at five meets this spring and tallied three finishes inside the top 10. Schirmer also was an NCAA Second Team All-American a year ago.
