The Gophers seven qualified events are the most for the program since 2018.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota concluded its time at the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, Ark., with a total of seven different event qualifications for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore., in June. The seven events qualified for the Maroon and Gold are the most for the program since 2018 when the team qualified a program record 14.
The 2024 Big Ten team champions got off to a hot start on Thursday with Shelby Frank claiming the NCAA West Regional crown in the women's hammer throw. The champion of the event at the conference meet, Frank's 67.96m (222-11) helped Minnesota sweep the men's (Angelos Mantzouranis) and women's hammer throw for the first time at the NCAA West Regional since the two-regional system began in 2010.
On Saturday Frank added a second event to her schedule by qualifying in the women's discus for the third time in her illustrious career. Frank's mark of 60.10m (197-2) was the second time of her career that she eclipsed the 60-meter mark in the discus. The Grand Forks, N.D., native will be one of just two women to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in both the discus and the hammer along with FIU's Michaelle Valentin.
Anthonett Nabwe was the second Gopher to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with the redshirt freshman earning a spot in the women's shot put. Nabwe's incredible freshman season was set to end after two rounds of the shot put competition, but on the final throw of the event Nabwe sent a clutch throw of 17.59m (57-8 1/2) to move from 44th to sixth place. Nabwe's clutch throw also broke her own school record in the event.
For the third straight season the Maroon and Gold will send a women's 4x100m relay team to the NCAA Outdoor Championships after the squad of Odell Frye, Victory Godah, Zariyah Black and Alliyah McNeil earned a time qualifier on Saturday night. The quartet, who finished third at Big Tens, put down the No. 2 time in school history and missed out on the school record set in 2023 by just 0.03 seconds. For Godah, Black and McNeil the ticket to Eugene is a first for the trio while Frye's will be her third outdoor relay appearance.
A short time later the Golden Gophers clinched yet another spot to the NCAA Championships in the 3000m steeplechase with Zoie Dundon earning an automatic qualifying spot out of heat one. The Big Ten freshman ran a relaxed and controlled race throughout and was able to coast to a third-place finish in a time of 10:20.76. Additionally, Dundon's trip to NCAAs marks the eighth straight outdoor championships that Minnesota will have a representative in the 3000m steeplechase with the streak dating back to 2016. During the streak Minnesota has qualified seven different individuals between the men and women's side.
On the straightaway it was Frye who punched her second ticket to Hayward Field in the 100m. The Waseca, Minn., native ran out of lane two and used an incredible start to clock a wind-legal lifetime best 11.12 (+1.2 m/s). Despite finishing fifth in her heat Frye was able to sneak into the NCAA Outdoor Championships field by way of the final time qualifying spot in 12th place overall, beating out Kayla Hunt of Baylor by 0.02 seconds. Frye's trip to nationals makes her just the third Gopher woman in school history to qualify in the 100m, joining Amira Young (2019, 2023) and Tahesia Harrigan (2002).
Moments later it was redshirt freshman Diarra Sow who claimed a spot in Eugene in the women's triple jump. Sow sat just outside the top 12 after the first round of the final flights of the competition before she put down a wind-aided lifetime best 13.51m (44-4) to move up inside the qualification window. The redshirt freshman capped the weekend off as Minnesota's sixth NCAA ticket punched by a freshman or redshirt freshman and made her the first triple jump representative since 2016 (Shanique Wright).
Other notable results for the Golden Gophers at the NCAA West Regional included a number of program top 10 performances. Maja Maunsbach and Zariyah Black both posted lifetime bests in the 100m hurdles with Maunsbach's 13.18 (+2.4 m/s), which is No. 3 all time at Minnesota, missing out on a trip to nationals by 0.05 seconds. Black's 100m hurdles time of 13.31 (+3.0 m/s) improved on her No. 4 time on Minnesota's all-time top 10 list. Godah's 11.19 (+2.3 m/s) time in the second round of the women's 100m moved her to No. 3 in program history while her 23.12 (+3.0 m/s) time in the 200m pushed her to No. 2 in program history.

The meet will be broadcast on ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN+ throughout the week with live results available on FlashResults.com.
