Connor Wietgrefe drafted to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Day Two of the MLB Draft
Minneapolis– Left-handed pitcher Connor Wietgrefe was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates with the 204th pick in the seventh round on day two of the draft at the Cowtown Coliseum, in Fort Worth, Texas.
This selection extends the Gophers Big Ten record of consecutive draft picks to 37 straight years. No other conference opponents have a draft streak that extends longer than 12 years.
The Prior Lake, Minn., native made 15 appearances (13 starts) for the Gophers in 2024, striking out 74 batters. He allowed just 24 earned runs in 78 innings. Wietgrefe became the first Gopher since 2019 to be named First Team All-Big Ten and one of only nine players in the Big Ten to pitch a complete game in 2024.Wietgrefe is the 12th Gopher pitcher to be drafted since 2017.
Heading into the 2024 season, Wietgrefe was ranked No.15 Top MLB Draft Prospects in the Big Ten by D1 Baseball. He was also No. 22 by Perfect Game.
During his sophomore campaign in 2023, Wietgrefe made 22 appearances (5 saves), striking out 58 and holding opponents to a .205 BAA. On May 12th, 2023, where he had his best outing of the season against No. 19 Maryland. He threw four shutout innings, with seven strikeouts. This performance allowed Wietgrefe to pick up his fourth save of the season as well as Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors.
Prior to Minnesota, Wietgrefe spent his freshman season (2022), at NIACC, where he made 13 appearances, striking out 59 in 46.1 innings.
Before his college baseball career, he played four years at Prior Lake H.S and was ranked the No. 6 left-handed pitcher in Minnesota by Perfect Game.
Wietgrefe joins just four other Gophers that were drafted by the Pirates. Most recently being J.P Massey in 2022.
The final day of the MLB Draft is July 16th.
