Polyak, Johnson Named to the U.S. Junior National Team Roster

MINNEAPOLIS - Gopher freshmen Joe Polyak and Jacob Johnson were each selected to the U.S. Junior National Swimming team roster, USA Swimming announced last Friday. A total of 71 swimmers were selected for the roster, including numerous World Junior and Junior Pan Pacific Champions.

Polyak was selected to compete in three events for Team USA: the 100m and 200m breaststroke, and the 200m individual medley. The Iowa City, Iowa native previously competed at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, winning gold in the 4x100 relay with a team time of 3:35.60 and a breaststroke split of 1:00.18. He also competed in the 100-meter breaststroke, recording a long-course time of 1:00.85 (ninth place), and the 200 individual medley, notching a long-course time of 2:01.35 (fourth place). Prior to Minnesota, Polyak swam with the Iowa Flyers Swim Club, was a three-time individual state champion, and was named National Swimming All-American for the 2023-24 season.

Johnson was selected to compete in both the 100m and 200m butterfly for Team USA. The Springfield, Penn. native joins the Gophers after a successful high school and club career. He is a three-time state champion, and a state record holder in the 100m fly. He has three NCSA Championships, most recently being from this past summer in the 100m fly. This past spring he was also a champion in both the 100m and 200m fly.

The University of Minnesota swimming and diving program is set to begin the 2024-25 season in Lincoln, Neb. on Friday, Oct. 4th. It will then make its home debut on Oct. 11th against Army.
