Gophers Battle to Shutout Win in First Road Game
10/3/2025 8:09:00 PM | Women's Hockey
BOSTON, Mass. – The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team opened its first road trip of the season with a 5-0 shutout victory over No. 13 Boston University on Friday night at Walter Brown Arena. With the win, the Gophers improve to 3-0-0 on the year and hand the Terriers their first loss of the 2025-26 campaign in their home opener.
Minnesota broke through midway through the opening period after BU took a five-minute major. On the ensuing power play, sophomore forward Abbey Murphy cleaned up a rebound in front to give the Gophers a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Murphy's third straight game lighting the lamp to open the season.
The Gophers doubled their advantage 8:13 into the second period when Jamie Nelson found Nelli Laitinen at the blue line. Laitinen's shot was redirected near the point and fluttered past BU's goaltender to make it 2-0 and marked her second tally of the season.
Early in the third, reigning WCHA Rookie of the Month Bella Fanale extended the lead to 3-0. On a two-on-one rush, Murphy slid a cross-crease pass to Fanale, who buried her fourth goal in just three games.
Madison Kaiser added to the lead with under three minutes to play, finishing a two-on-zero rush with Josefin Bouveng to make it 4-0. Murphy capped off the night with her second goal of the game, wiring a shot top shelf off a feed from Sydney Morrow to seal the 5-0 victory.
In net, Hannah Clark earned her third career shutout with a steady performance, stopping all 24 shots she faced.
Quotable
"Good win on the road here at BU," said head coach Brad Frost. "Our start wasn't great, credit to BU. They came out on top of their game early, and we came with ours later thanks to some big saves by Hannah Clark. We found our game as we went and I'm proud of this group coming away with a five to nothing win on the road against a very good team. "
