MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3-ranked University of Minnesota women's hockey team scored four third period goals to hand No. 1 Wisconsin its first loss of the season, earning a statement 5-1 win on Friday night at LaBahn Arena.
Wisconsin struck first 6:42 into the opening frame when Cassie Hall scored through traffic to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead.
The Gophers came up empty on an early second-period power play but found the equalizer late in the frame. With 1:10 remaining, Abbey Murphy sent a pinpoint pass from the blue line through the Wisconsin defense to Josefin Bouveng in the low slot. Bouveng lifted the puck top shelf to tie the game at 1-1. Goaltender Hannah Clark was outstanding in the period, stopping all 23 Wisconsin shots to keep the game even.
Minnesota seized control early in the third. Just 2:10 into the period, freshman Sienna D'Alessandro buried the first goal of her career, cleaning up a rebound in front to give the Gophers a 2-1 lead.
The Maroon and Gold doubled their advantage just two minutes later. Tereza Plosova found Sydney Morrow, who broke free on a one-on-zero rush and finished with a smooth backhand-to-forehand move for her third goal of the year.
Bouveng added her second of the night 8:32 into the period, ripping a power-play goal from a sharp angle off a feed from Nelli Laitinen to make it 4-1.
Murphy capped the scoring just 29 seconds later, burying her 15th goal of the season amidst heavy traffic in front to seal the 5-1 victory.
With the win, Minnesota improves to 10-1-0 overall (6-1-0 WCHA), while Wisconsin falls to 10-1-0 (6-1-0 WCHA).
Quotable
"It's the first time that we've won here in a long time," said head coach Brad Frost. "I'm just really proud of our group, our staff, how we prepared our players, but mostly in how they played, especially in the third period.
