11/1/2025 4:43:00 PM | Women's Hockey
MADISON, Wis. – The No. 3 University of Minnesota women's hockey team fell 7-2 to top-ranked Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon at LaBahn Arena. The Badgers jumped out to an early lead with two quick goals in the opening minutes, earning a series split with the Gophers.
Wisconsin wasted no time getting on the board, striking just 14 seconds into the contest. After an initial block by Sydney Morrow, Wisconsin's Maggie Scannell buried a rebound through traffic to give the Badgers the early advantage.
The Badgers doubled their lead less than two minutes later when Cassie Hall fed Kirsten Simms in front for a low-slot finish to make it 2-0.
Minnesota cut the deficit to one late in the first period with its first shorthanded goal of the season. On the penalty kill, Josefin Bouveng found Nelli Laitinen at the left faceoff dot, where the senior defender ripped a glove-side wrist shot past the goaltender to make it 2-1.
The Badgers extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second frame on a one-timer from the right circle just 1:36 into the period, then added a power-play goal from Laila Edwards at 17:21 to take a 4-1 edge into the final intermission.
Wisconsin continued in the third, scoring its fifth goal of the afternoon off a deflection that found Caroline Harvey in the high slot.
Abbey Murphy gave Minnesota a spark midway through the period, netting her third power-play goal of the season on a wrist shot from the left faceoff dot off a feed from Ava Lindsay, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Badgers responded with two more goals, including one on the power play, at 9:35 and 11:48 to seal the 7-2 victory.
With the result, the Gophers move to 10-2-0 overall (6-2-0 WCHA), while Wisconsin improves to 11-1-0 (7-1-0 WCHA).
Quotable
"It was obviously not the result we wanted here today," Head coach Brad Frost said. "We were a little sluggish to start the game, unfortunately. They were able to get a good bounce there, put one away early, and put us on our heels. I'm proud of our team continuing to battle, but it was just one of those games where every time we pushed, they pushed back."
