Minnesota Takes Down Marquette 90-47

The Golden Gophers return to Williams Arena on Friday against NJIT
MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's basketball (3-0, 0-0 Big Ten) defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) 90-47 at Williams Arena on Tuesday night in front of 2,999 fans.
The Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Grace Grocholski, who had 19 points and eight rebounds. Tori McKinney tacked on 16 points and two steals and Sophie Hart chipped in as well with 14 points and two steals. Brylee Glenn had 13 along with four rebounds and two assists.
Minnesota did an excellent job taking care of the basketball, dishing out 24 assists while turning the ball over eight times. Mara Braun's seven assists were the most for the Gophers. Amaya Battle also contributed with seven assists of her own. Battle is now two assists away from a career 500 assists.
The Maroon and Gold forced 19 Marquette turnovers while committing eight. Those takeaways turned into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Hart led the way individually for the Gophers with two steals.
How It Happened
Minnesota started out the scoring by going on an 11-0 run, culminating in a three from McKinney, to take an early lead with 6:31 left in the first quarter. The Gophers then lost some of that lead, but still entered the quarter break with a 22-12 advantage. Minnesota did most of its first quarter damage in the paint, scoring 12 of its 22 points close to the basket.
Minnesota built that first quarter lead to 35-24 before going on a 7-0 run starting at the 2:41 mark in the second period, highlighted by a bucket from Hart, to increase its lead to 42-24. The Gophers proceeded to tack on one point to that lead and enjoyed a 45-26 advantage heading into halftime. Minnesota saw non-starters score seven of its 23 total points off the bench in the quarter.
The Gophers continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a three from Grocholski, to expand its lead further to 65-37 with two seconds to go in the third, a score which remained until the end of the third quarter. Minnesota played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 20 points in the paint.
Minnesota kept widening that lead, expanding it to 73-42 before going on a 10-0 run, finished off by Glenn's layup, to grow the lead to 83-42 with 2:51 to go in the contest. The Gophers coasted the rest of the way for the 90-47 win. Minnesota fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 25 points.
