Medved vs. Alcorn State: First Meeting
STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Gopher men's basketball team hosts its second game this opening week when Alcorn State comes to town on Saturday at 11 a.m. The game will be broadcast on Peacock and through the Gopher Radio Network on KFAN 100.3 FM.
• Minnesota opened the 2025-26 season with an 87-60 win over Gardner-Webb on Monday night. Cade Tyson scored a game-high 30 points, Jaylen Crocker-Johnson recorded his fourth career double-double with 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, and Langston Reynolds had 14 points, nine boards, and four assists in head coach Niko Medved's debut. Minnesota jumped out to a 23-1 lead to start the game and never looked back.
• The Gardner-Webb win marked a monumental game for Tyson. Not only did he reach his 1,000th career point, but he also became the first Golden Gopher to score 30 points in his Minnesota debut. Tyson was one of three players in the Big Ten to record 30 points in the opening week. He joins Fletcher Loyer (Purdue) and John Blackwell, who recorded 30 and 31 points earlier this week.
• Jaylen Crocker-Johnson established his fourth career double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. He had already recorded the double-double by halftime, with 10 points and 11 rebounds in just 15 minutes. It was his first since having 12 points and 11 rebounds vs UT Martin on Feb. 6, 2024, while playing at Little Rock.
• A few Gophers made their firsts of their career in the Gardner-Webb game. Isaac Asuma, who played in all 32 games as a freshman last year, recorded his first career start. Grayson Grove and Kai Shinholster each played in their first collegiate game. Grove, who redshirted last season, played eight minutes and recorded his first bucket and rebound. Shinholster, a true freshman, saw 14 minutes of action and scored seven points. Also making his collegiate debut was RJ Spencer, who joined the team as a walk-on in September.
ALL-TIME SERIES
• The Nov. 8 game marks the second appearance between the Gophers and Braves in school history, and the first in 40 years. Minnesota and Alcorn State were scheduled for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, but were cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and travel complications (weather).
• Minnesota won its only meeting between the two teams, which took place on Dec. 28, 1985.
CAREER MILESTONES
• Minnesota's Cade Tyson earned his 1,000th career point on Mon., Nov. 3, vs. Gardner-Webb. It took him just 16:52 when he hit his first three of the game and eighth point of the game en route to 30 in the game.
• The senior from Monroe, N.C., scored 912 points at Belmont, 81 at North Carolina, and now 30 at Minnesota for 1,023 points.
ABOUT THE BRAVES
• Jake Morton was named Alcorn State University's 15th coach on April 23, 2025. A veteran coach with over 20 years of experience at all levels of collegiate basketball, Morton joins the Braves after most recently serving on the coaching staff at Florida State University.
• Alcorn State is in the midst of playing four games in nine days. The Braves fell in their season opener to Florida State, 108-76, and X against South Alabama Thursday, Nov. 6. After Minnesota's game on Saturday, ASU plays at Maryland (Nov. 11) and Howard (Nov. 13).
• Through two games, three players average double digits in Shane Lancaster (18.5 ppg), Nick Woodard (15.0) and Tycen McDaniels (13.0), while Woodard averaged a team-best 6.5 rebounds. Davian Williams has 10 assists, while Lancaster has nine three-pointers. As a team, the Braves average 73 points and shoot 47.2 percent.
