Cade Tyson had team-leading totals of 24 points and seven rebounds, Isaac Asuma finished with 15 points and a team-high six assists, and three other Gophers players reached double-figures as Minnesota (7-5) defeated Campbell, 78-50, before a crowd of 7,988 at Williams Arena.
The Gophers won for the third time in the past four games and shot a season-best 57.7 percent (30-of-52), which included going 10-of-20 from three-point range, while being credited with 26 assists on 30 made field goals. Campbell (5-7) was coming off a game in which it was within poin10 ts in the second half of a 98-70 loss at No. 7 Gonzaga. The Camels entered the game averaging 81.7 points per game, but the Gophers held Campbell to a season-low 50 points, which also tied for the fewest points allowed by Minnesota this season.
Tyson, who leads the Big Ten and ranks fourth nationally in scoring, made 10-of-15 field goals, including 3-of-5 from long-range, while grabbing seven boards and dishing out five assists. It was his seventh game with 20 or more points this season, including a career-high 38 versus Texas Southern and 30 in the season-opener versus Gardner-Webb. Asuma filled up the stat sheet with 15 points, six assists, three steals, two rebounds, and he tied his career-high with a pair of blocked shots. Jaylen Crocker-Johnson finished with 14 points and three assists, Langston Reynolds added 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting, and Bobby Durkin had 11 points, five rebounds, and three assists.
Other notable performances came from Grayson Grove, who had five rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocked shots, with the latter three figures either tying or setting new career-highs, and Kai Shinholster having four rebounds, three assists, and three steals, all of which are career-highs.
Crocker-Johnson opened the scoring for the Gophers with a three-pointer from the top of the key, and Reynolds added a dunk and a layup for a 7-0 lead at the 17:40 mark. Tyson made it 10-0 with a three from the wing, and Asuma made a pair of free throws for a 12-point lead. Minnesota made 4-of-6 field goals to start, while forcing three Campbell turnovers, and the Camels missed their first seven field goal attempts before finally getting a layup with 15:28 left. Crocker-Johnson's second trey made it 15-2, and after a 4-0 Campbell run, Durkin beat the shot clock on a three-pointer to extend the lead back to 12. The Gophers connected on 4-of-6 three-pointers to start the game, while Campbell was 0-of-6.
Durkin's three began an 8-0 run for the Gophers to stretch the lead to 23-6, but the Camels answered with a 10-4 run to cut the deficit to 27-16 with 6:27 left in the half. Reynolds added a layup and a dunk and Tyson scored for a 33-18 lead, and Tyson went on a personal 8-2 run with a layup and a pair of three-pointers to send the Gophers to the locker room with a 41-22 lead.
Tyson led the Gophers with 15 first-half points and six rebounds, making 6-of-10 field goals and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Reynolds was 5-of-5 for 10 points, Crocker-Johnson had eight points and three assists, and Asuma had five points, four assists, and three steals. The Gophers were 16-of-29 (.552) from the field, including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-4 at the line. Minnesota held a slim 19-16 edge in rebounds.
Durkin scored five points, including a three-pointer, and Crocker-Johnson added four points to reach double-figures, as Minnesota extended its lead to 52-29 early in the second half. Asuma added a corner three, Durkin connected on his third trifecta, Tyson threw down a dunk, and Crocker-Johnson scored in the lane for a 62-37 lead with 11:44 left. Campbell cut it to 62-41, but Tyson drove the lane for a dunk, then added a three-point play, and Asuma drained a three-pointer to put the Gophers up by 29. At that point, Minnesota had made 10-of-14 (.714) second-half field goals, including 4-of-5 from long-range. A layup by Asuma and another dunk by Tyson made it 74-45 with 5:29 remaining.
The Gophers wrap up their three-game homestand and play their final non-conference game when they play host to Fairleigh-Dickinson next Monday, Dec. 29. Tipoff at Williams Arena is set for 8:00 p.m. CST, and the game will be televised on Big Ten Network.
