Medved vs. FDU: First Meeting
Minnesota vs. NEC Teams: 10-0 Â
STARTING FIVE
• The Golden Gopher men's basketball team closes out the nonconference season on Monday, Dec. 29, when FDU (Fairleigh Dickinson) comes to town. Minnesota is 6-0 at home in nonconference play and 7-0 with the Big Ten win over Indiana. The last time Minnesota held an undefeated home record in the first half of the season was the 2020-21 season, when the Gophers finished 9-0. That season had a shortened nonconference year due to COVID restrictions.Â
• Minnesota is looking for three-straight wins after a 78-50 win over Campbell on Dec. 21. In that game, Cade Tyson had team-leading 24 points and seven rebounds, Isaac Asuma finished with 15 points and three other Gophers players reached double-figures. The Gophers won for the third time in the past four games and shot a season-best 57.7 percent (30-of-52), which included going 10-of-20 from three-point range.
• Cade Tyson is first in the Big Ten and fourth nationally in scoring at 22.8 ppg and fourth nationally in overall points (273). He leads the league in free throws (86), fourth nationally, while his free throw attempts (105) are second in the B1G and seventh in the nation. He also ranks fifth in the B1G in field goals (80) and 13th in FG percentage (53.7).Â
• On assist percentage for the season, the Gophers currently lead the entire nation at 73.5 percent. Minnesota had 26 assists on 30 field goals vs. Campbell, 27 assists off 28 field goals vs. Texas Southern and 18 assists off 19 field goals vs. Chicago State.Â
• Isaac Asuma has scored back-to-back double-digit and six-plus assist games heading into the FDU game. Asuma had 13 points vs. Texas Southern and another 15 against Campbell. In the win over the Camels, Asuma also established two blocks and a season-high three steals. On the year, the sophomore guard has 122 points, 21 assists and six double-digit point games.Â
GOPHERS VS. FDU Â Â Â Â
• Minnesota is 2-0 all-time against FDU, dating back to 2002. The Gophers and Knights have met three times at Williams Arena, most recently last year, all in December.Â
• Minnesota defeated the Knights in a 74-60 win at Williams last year on Dec. 21, 2024. Dawson Garcia recorded a double-double with 18 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, and Mike Mitchell Jr. had 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists, as Minnesota held FDU to a season-low scoring total.
ABOUT THE KNIGHTSÂ Â Â
• FDU enters the Minnesota game with a 3-9 overall record after a 72-61 loss to Boston College on Dec. 22. The Knights opened the season at Iowa State with an 88-50 loss and also fell at Texas, 93-58 in their other power-four opponents. FDU was predicted to finish fifth in the NEC preseason poll. Like Minnesota, FDU has almost an entirely new roster, signing 12 in the offseason and returning just three.Â
• The Knights are led in scoring by Eric Parnell, who averages 10.9 points, while Noah Melson closely follows at 10.3. Joey Niesman and Cyril Martynov follow with 9.3 and 9.1 points respectively. Taeshaud Jackson is the rebound leader for the Knights as he averages 7.3 per game.Â
• FDU is averaging 70.9 points, while allowing 74.8 per game. The Knights are shooting 40.9 percent from the field, including a 32.2 clip past the arc. FDU averages 38 rebounds per game.Â
ON THE DOCKETÂ Â Â Â
• Following the FDU game, the Gophers are back in action on Jan. 3 when they travel to Northwestern to start the full Big Ten Conference schedule. Tip off is at 4 p.m. on the Big Ten Network and on KFAN FM 100.3 with Mike Grimm and Al Nolen.
