Know a Newcomer: Wyatt Duchateau

There are 11 newcomers to the Minnesota wrestling team for the 2024-25 season, so GopherSports is doing Q&As with them in order to get to know them better. Up next, Wyatt Duchateau, a true freshman from Hartland, Wis.

Coming out of Arrowhead High School, Duchateau was a three-time state champion (132, 145 and 150 pounds). MatScouts rated him No. 132 on its final Big Board and WIWrestle tabbed him eighth in the pound-for-pound rankings in Wisconsin. Duchateau did not compete for the Gophers during the regular season this year.
GopherSports.com: How did you get into wrestling?
Wyatt Duchateau: "A flier from school in first grade."
GS: When did you realize you might be able to compete in college?
WD: "During middle school after I won my second state title."
GS: What was your recruiting process like?
WD: "I went on three official visits and one unofficial, but by far and away the Minnesota environment was the right place for me."
GS: What made you decide on Minnesota?
WD: "Coaches, the environment, the ability Minnesota had to develop their wrestlers, and the academic aspect."
GS: What differences have you noticed between high school and college wrestling?
WD: "College is a much faster pace with a lot more hand fighting."
GS: How would you describe your wrestling style?
WD: "More open and funky."
GS: Are there any particular teammates who have taken you under their wing and helped in your transition to college?
WD: "I would say the team as a whole as helped me with the transition."
GS: Do you have any pre-match rituals?
WD: "When I'm in the hole I need to pull my singlet up and put all my clothes back on, then when I'm on deck I take my shorts off and keep my shirt on with my headphones, then with 15 seconds left in the match I take my headphones off, throw my phone onto my clothes pile, and then take my headphones off."
GS: Are there any particular wrestlers you look up to or try to emulate?
WD: "I was try to wrestle a lot like my club coach Max Askren, especially with his hand fighting and scrambling."
GS: What is something you are looking forward to in your time as a Gopher?
WD: "Being able to compete at a D1 level."
