The 'U' Walks Off Miami (OH) on Day 2 of the Kajikawa Classic

TEMPE, AZ – The University of Minnesota Softball team (1-2, 0-0 B1G) picked up their first win of the season as they defeated Miami (OH) (0-3, 0-0 MAC). Breezy Burnett hit a walk off single to win the game for the 'U'. Minnesota was supposed to also take on Arizona State tonight but the game was called off and won't be rescheduled due to delays in games earlier in the day.
Junior Presley Hosick was dominant on Saturday, striking out nine Miami (OH) hitters over eight innings of work to help propel the Gophers past the RedHawks 4-3.
In addition to her nine strikeouts, Hosick (1-0) threw eight innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on seven hits and walking three for Minnesota (1-2).
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were led by senior Nani Valencia, who went 2-for-4 for the game with a home run and an RBI. Senior Margaret Tobias put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a triple and a walk. Junior Breezy Burnett also contributed for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The 'U' got on the scoreboard first in the second inning. Valencia put Minnesota on the board with a one-out solo home run off junior Lea Chevrier.
After the RedHawks rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Gophers came back to retake the lead in the fourth inning. Senior Reili Gardner came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Gophers.
Minnesota's lead had disappeared once the fifth inning came around and turned into a 3-2 Miami (OH) advantage, when the Golden Gophers tied up the game at three.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Minnesota walked it off on an RBI single off the bat of Burnett.

» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed one run across.
» Minnesota pitchers limited Miami (OH) to just 2-for-12 (.167) with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 33 Miami (OH) hitters in the game, allowing eight ground balls and five fly balls while striking out nine.
» The Golden Gophers drew four walks from Miami (OH) pitching.
» Valencia led the Golden Gophers at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
» Miami (OH) was led offensively by senior Jenna Golembiewski, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI.
» Chevrier led the RedHawks pitching staff, throwing 7.1 innings of four-run ball.
UP NEXT
The 'U' will take on Utah tomorrow at approximately 12:15pm CT. This game will conclude Minnesota's time in Arizona after calling off the game against ASU due to delays in games earlier in the day.
