Three Gophers Qualify for NCAAs on First Day of Zone Diving

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Three members of the University of Minnesota diving team punched their tickets to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Monday, the first day of the Zone D Diving Championships.
In the men's 1-meter, both sophomore YuTong Wang and junior Drew Bennett each earned their NCAA bids after finishing within the top-nine of the finals. Wang took the top spot on the day with a score of 770.15, while Bennett finished seventh with a score of 681.75. Each held their spots from the prelims.
Junior Vivi Del Angel qualified for the NCAA Championships in the women's 3-meter, finishing in 5th place with a score of 637.10. She finished second in the prelims with a score of 332.25.
Five other Gophers dove on Monday, each finishing outside the finals-qualifying placement during prelims.
Braylon Goodno notched a 263.90 in the men's 1-meter prelims, placing him 18th.
In the women's 3-meter prelims Elna Widerstrom led non-qualifying Gophers with a score of 295.95 and 19th place. She was followed by Kate LaMonica with 274.55 (29th), Addie Albrecht with 273.60 (30th), and Gabby Mauder with 237.30 (51st).
The Zone Diving Championships continue on Tuesday with the women's 1-meter and the men's 3 meter.
