Gophers Top Colgate to Advance to 2025 Frozen Four

3/15/2025 7:34:00 PM | Women's Hockey

MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 4-seeded Golden Gopher women's hockey team (29-11-1, 19-8-1 WCHA) will make the 16th Frozen Four appearance in program history after taking down No. 5 Colgate (30-9-0, 18-4-0 ECAC) 3-2 in the NCAA Regional Final on Friday afternoon.

Top-10 Patty Kazmaier Award Finalist Abbey Murphy led the way for Minnesota, lighting the first lamp at Ridder Arena on a power play at the 5:40 mark of the opening period, assisted by Chloe Primerano and goaltender Hannah Clark. The nation's leading scorer then struck again on the next Gopher power play at the 5:18 mark of the second period, this time assisted by Ella Huber and Natalie Mlynkova. It was Murphy's 102nd and 103rd career goals, passing Natalie Darwitz for sixth-all time in career scores in program history.

Junior defender and transfer from Colgate Sydney Morrow tallied the game-winning goal for the Maroon & Gold at the midpoint of the second period, assisted by Josefin Bouveng and Primerano, sealing the victory against her former squad.

The Raiders struck twice in the third period, courtesy of Elyssa Biederman on a power play and Avery Pickering at even-strength, bringing the Gopher lead back to one with nine minutes remaining. However, Minnesota was able to hold Colgate scoreless en route to securing its return to Ridder Arena next week for the Frozen Four.

Freshman goaltender Hannah Clark notched her 25th victory of the season tying her with Noora Raty in 2010-11 and Sydney Peters in 2016-17 for the eighth-most season wins by a goaltender in program history. Clark moves to a 25-9-1 record after recording 24 saves and a .923 save percentage in the first NCAA Tournament start of her career. The Oshawa, Ontario native, who holds the Minnesota school record for most wins by a freshman goaltender, moves to a 4-2 record in the 2024-25 postseason.

Quotable:
"We are thrilled to be going to the Frozen Four," said head coach Brad Frost. "Really proud of this group. Fought through a lot of adversity throughout the year, and to see them come together and stick together, in particular in the third period, when things got a little hairy and a little tougher, but found a way. Got the saves that we needed, really good sticks and big blocks, and things that you need to do to win big games at the end of the year."
