Minnesota Racks up 8 Runs in Win over St. Thomas

MINNEAPOLIS- The Golden Gophers (9-10, 2-4 Big Ten) picked up the 8-2 victory over St. Thomas (9-7, 3-0 Summit League) Wednesday night.
Freshman Adam Urban (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minnesota (9-10). The right-hander went 1.1 shutout innings while giving up one hit. Senior Justin Thorsteinson also made an impact on the mound for the Golden Gophers, starting the ballgame and throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits, with no walks and two strikeouts. Eli Sundqusit picked up the save after throwing 2.2 with four strikeouts.
In the batter's box, the Golden Gophers were led by junior Easton Richter, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Junior Jake Elbeery put together a noteworthy performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Jack Spanier also contributed for Minnesota, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a walk and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers were trailing 2-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Weber Neels' run-scoring single highlighted a two-run inning for Minnesota.
The score stayed at 2-2 until the very next inning, when the Golden Gophers put runs on the scoreboard once again. Minnesota scored once on an RBI single off the bat of senior Jake Perry, which brought the score to 3-2 in favor of the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota kept St. Thomas (MN) without a run before building their lead to 4-2 the following inning. The Golden Gophers picked up a run on Elbeery's two-out RBI double.
Minnesota kept the Tommies scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Golden Gophers scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a two-run home run off the bat of Richter and a two-run single from Spanier, bringing the score to 8-2 in favor of Minnesota. The score remained 8-2 for the rest of the game, as the Golden Gophers coasted to the win.
