Gophers Split Day 1 of the LSU Round Robin

GAME 1 | Minnesota 1, South Alabama 0
BATON ROUGE, La. --Junior Sydney Schwartz was dealing on Saturday, tossing a four-hit shutout to lead the Minnesota Golden Gophers (10-10, 0-0 B1G) past the South Alabama Jaguars (11-13, 0-0 Sun Belt) 1-0.
Schwartz (3-6) went the distance for Minnesota, giving up four hits, walking four and striking out four.
Offensively, the Gophers were led by senior Nani Valencia, who went 0-for-2 on the day with three walks. Freshman Tinley Easton compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-4 with an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game stayed scoreless until the bottom half of the ninth, when Minnesota walked it off on an RBI single off the bat of Easton.
GAME NOTES
» Schwartz tossed a four-hit shutout for the 'U'.
» Minnesota's highest scoring inning was the ninth, when it pushed one run across.
» Minnesota pitchers limited South Alabama to just 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
» Minnesota pitchers faced 36 South Alabama hitters in the game, allowing 13 ground balls and nine fly balls while striking out four.
» The Gophers drew nine walks from South Alabama pitching.
» Valencia led the Maroon and Gold at the plate, going 0-for-2.

GAME 2 | No. 4 LSU 10, Minnesota 0
BATON ROUGE, La. --The Minnesota Golden Gophers (10-11, 0-0 B1G) were not able to score a run against LSU (22-1, 0-0 SEC) pitcher freshman Jayden Heavener on Saturday and were shut out 10-0 by the No. 4 Tigers.
Sophomore Jessa Snippes (1-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minnesota.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Minnesota did not advance a runner past second base in the game. The Gophers went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, last placing a runner as far as second in the fifth, when senior Kayla Chavez made it into scoring position with one out.
GAME NOTES
» Minnesota pitchers faced 28 LSU hitters in the game, allowing five ground balls and five fly balls while striking out two.
» Senior Margaret Tobias led the Golden Gophers at the plate, going 1-for-2.
» LSU was led offensively by junior Avery Hodge, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and five RBI.
» Heavener led the Tigers pitching staff, throwing five scoreless innings.

The 'U' will be back in action tomorrow for day 2 of the LSU Round Robin. They will take on South Alabama at 11:00 am followed by facing #4 LSU at 1:30pm. All games taking place at Tiger Park on the campus of LSU.
