Olson Promoted to Associate Head Coach

5/30/2025 4:20:00 PM | Men's Swimming & Diving, Women's Swimming & Diving

MINNEAPOLIS – Maddy Olson has been promoted to associate head coach, it was announced Friday by director of swimming and diving Kelly Kremer.

"Maddy is a tireless worker who has gained the respect of everyone she has come in contact with as a representative of Golden Gopher Swimming and Diving," Kremer said. "She has developed into one of the best young coaching minds in our sport, and it makes me happy to see her be deservedly recognized as associate head coach."

Olson recently finished her seventh season on the coaching staff and fourth working with the distance group. She has coached seven NCAA Qualifiers in the past two seasons alone, including All-Americans Bar Soloveychik, Eliot Kennedy and Megan Van Berkom. Soloveychik was an Olympic Finalist in Paris last summer in the 4 x 200 Free Relay and holds eight Minnesota School Records.

In addition, Olson is the primary coach for Joey Tepper, who has qualified to represent Team USA at the upcoming World Championships in Singapore and is coming off a fifth-place World Cup finish in 10K Open Water where Olson served as a coach for USA Swimming.

"This program means so much to me," Olson said. "I'm very appreciative of Kelly's belief in me, and am looking forward to another season at Minnesota."

Olson earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 2016. She worked in the athletic communications department throughout her undergraduate career and as a postgraduate assistant. During that time, Olson covered Gopher swimming and diving for three seasons.

Upon graduation, she spent time at the United States Olympic Committee and USA Swimming where she worked in communications and social media, covering events like the 2018 Winter Olympics and 2017 FINA World Championships.

She returned to the U in May of 2018 as assistant coach/coordinator of recruiting and communications for five seasons. She was then promoted to Associate Coach for Swimming and Diving in June of 2023.

While assisting with the program's communications and recruiting efforts, Olson has played a vital role in attracting some of the best talent in the nation to the Twin Cities. In 2019, Olson helped attract a top-16 nationally ranked recruiting class to the U on the women's side. Olson also assisted in bringing in one of the top recruiting classes in the history of the program to Minnesota in the form of the 2020 class.
