“U” Women Top Tampa, Men Split with Tampa and Notre Dame in 2026 Opening Tri-Dual

TAMPA, FLA. – The University of Minnesota swimming programs opened their 2026 schedule in the Sunshine State this afternoon with the women's program picking up a 186-76 victory over the University of Tampa Spartans and the men's program collecting the split with a 164-98 win over Tampa and a 117-145 loss to the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Minnesota closed out the tri-dual totaled 15 first place finishes over 28 total events. Katie McCarthy, Mina Kaljevic, Ava Yablonski, and Morgan Thomas led things on the women's side for the Gophers, picking up two individual event wins each. Jacob Johnson led things for the men, picking up two individual event wins as well.
McCarthy kicked things off individually for Minnesota, tallying a 9:57.74 to win the 1,000 free. Mina and Anja Kaljevic followed things up in the 200 free, collecting a 1:50.74 and 1:50.81 respectively for the 1-2 finish.
Yablonski and Kamdyn Periat added another 1-2 finish for the Gophers in the 100 back, tallying a 53.82 and 54.67 respectively.
Rachel Conley and Jacob Johnson each picked up their first event win of the afternoon to sweep the 200 fly races with Conley finishing with a time of 2:00.15 and Johnson finishing with a time of 1:44.00.
Thomas led a 1-2-3 finish for Minnesota in the women's 50 free, tallying 22.81 to top the heat sheet. Livi Wanner and Paige Moreen followed closely behind with a 23.04 and a 23.46.
Kaljevic tallied her second event win of the day, leading another 1-2-3 finish for the Gophers in the 100 free with a time of 50.47. Wanner and Periat followed up in second and third with times of 51.16 and 51.39.
Yablonski topped the charts in the 200 back for her second event win of the afternoon with a 1:58.66. Elise Jacobs and Finnly Jollands took second and third respectively with times of 2:00.34 and 2:00.91.
McCarthy and Daniel Eichel swept the 500 free events for Minnesota, with McCarthy tallying a 4:50.46 and Eichel collecting a 4:24.67. Thomas and Johnson followed up with a sweep in the 100 fly events, with Thomas hitting a 52.90 and Johnson hitting a 47.11.
Joe Polyak closed out the individual events with a win in the men's 200 IM, topping the heat sheet with a 1:48.43.
Minnesota collected victories in both women's relays of the afternoon, tallying a 1:39.82 in the 200 medley relay and a 1:32.70 in the 200 free relay.
The Gopher divers are back in the diving well next week in Boca Raton for a tilt against Florida Atlantic and North Texas. Action against the Owls and the Mean Green is currently set for 9:00 AM (CT).
