Sutherland Homers Twice as Gophers Take Down Stetson on Opening Day

2/13/2026 10:15:00 PM | Baseball

DELAND, FLA. – The University of Minnesota baseball team opened their 2026 campaign tonight with the program's first ever matchup against Stetson University, stringing together double digit hits and a trio of home runs to take down the Hatters 11-5.

Senior Joe Sperry (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minnesota (1-0). The right-hander went 5.2 innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing one walk and striking out four.

Junior Charlie Sutherland went 3-for-6 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with four RBIs. Jack Spanier added to the power-hitting performance by going 3 for 4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs. Easton Richter also helped out for the Gopher offense, going 4-for-6 with a double and three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After trailing 0-2 to start the game, Easton Richter laced a two run double out into right center field to give Minnesota their first runs of the game and tie things up.

Another Hatter run left the Gophers at a 2-3 deficit entering the third inning, but Charlie tied things up with his first home run of the night to make it 3-3.

Sutherland would come back to the plate in the top of the fourth, knocking a three run home run over the right field wall to give Minnesota their first lead of the evening.

Michael Lippe would tally an RBI single before the end of the inning, giving the Gophers a 7-3 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Jack Spanier led things off in the fifth with a solo home run of his own, canceling out a Stetson run in the previous frame to make the score 8-4.

A triple from Ty Allen off the right field wall scored Weber Neels from first base, giving Minnesota a five run lead before the end of the inning.

Richter tallied his third RBI of the night in the top of the sixth, scoring Jack Mosh from first base to pull the Gophers into double digits.

Stetson added their final run of the night in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the scoreline to 10-5.

Spanier added an RBI double in the eighth to his opening day resume, giving him two runs batted in to end the game.
