MINNEAPOLIS – No. 7 Minnesota (10-5, 4-3 B1G) dominated its final road test of the season with a 37-6 win at Maryland (4-8, 0-7 B1G) Sunday afternoon in College Park, Md.
The Golden Gophers won eight of the 10 matches with the first seven coming by bonus points (four tech falls, two major decisions and one fall). The win was the eighth in a row for Minnesota over the Terrapins, while in the last four matchups the point advantage has been 160-12 for the Gophers. The 37 points scored and 31-point margin of victory were both the most for the Maroon and Gold on the road in the series.
The dual began off at 125 with No. 10 Jore Volk scoring a 15-3 major decision over Abram Cline. He had a first-period takedown and added two two points in the second off an escape and stall. Leading 5-1 with 50 seconds to go, Volk kicked into high gear with three points off stalls, two more takedowns and riding time. It was Volk's second major decision of the season, both of which have come in the last three matches, and improved his record to 18-4 on the season.
Maryland's lone win of the first half came at 133 pounds with No. 14 Braxton Brown topping Brandon Morvari, 5-0.
The first of back-to-back technical falls came at 141 with No. 9 Vance VomBaur left no doubt against Dario Lemus. Leading 3-0 after the first, VomBaur broke it open in the second with three more takedowns in the second period for a 13-2 advantage. VomBaur then ended it early, 19-4, at the 6:31 mark for his second straight tech fall win and 10th bonus-point victory of the season.
No. 17 Drew Roberts followed with a tech fall of his own, stopping Clayton Gabrielson, 20-5 at 4:42 in the 149-pound matchup. Roberts set the tone from the start with three takedowns in the first three minutes for a 9-2 lead. He didn't let up in the second period, recording a reversal and three more takedowns to secure his first tech fall victory since last season's Big Ten Championships.
The first half was highlighted by Charlie Millard's pin of Mekhi Neal at 157 pounds. In the opening period, Millard got a takedown and later added a turn for three nearfall points. After allowing Neal to escape to start the second, Millard locked in a cradle to get his first pin of the season and fifth of his career at the 3:39 mark. It was Minnesota's first pin in a dual since last season against Rutgers when Gable Steveson beat Yaraslau Slavikouski on Feb. 5.
Coming out of intermission, No. 11 Andrew Sparks tallied the team's third tech fall of the day when he knocked off AJ Rodrigues 19-3 (5:00) at 165. In a familiar theme, Sparks was aggressive from the start with three first-period takedowns for a 9-2 advantage. He started on top in the second period and turned Rodrigues three times, twice for four points and once for two as the period came to a close. It was Sparks' third tech fall of the season and first since Dec. 7.
Minnesota's second major decision of the day came at 174 pounds with No. 24 Ethan Riddle topping Seth Digby, 11-2. Riddle led 3-0 after one period then grew the lead to 7-0 after two. One more takedown in the third, plus riding time, resulted in Riddle's second major of the season and first bonus-point win since Nov. 16.
The Gophers' fourth and final tech fall came at 184 with No. 4 Max McEnelly easily dispatching Sepanta Ahanj-Elias, 19-4 (3:22). McEnelly stormed out of the gates with five takedowns in the first period, building a 15-4 lead. After a quick escape to start the second, McEnelly finished Ahanj-Elias off with another takedown 22 seconds into the second period for his ninth tech fall and 11th bonus-point win of the season, both of which lead the team.
Maryland snapped the six-match losing streak in the dual at 197 in the day's only ranked matchup as No. 17 Branson John topped No. 25 Gavin Nelson, 4-1. The only takedown of the match came in the closing seconds of the opening period, staking John to a 3-0 lead.
The dual closed out at heavyweight with No. 10 Koy Hopke defeating Oscar Williams by decision, 18-11. Hopke held a comfortable 9-2 lead after the first period, though Williams trimmed it to 13-7 going into the third. Hopke built his lead back up to 17-8 with less than 20 seconds to go, but a late takedown from Williams prevented the bonus-point win. The result still matched Hopke with Volk for the team lead at 18 victories this season.
Minnesota closes out the regular season next Sunday with a visit from Michigan State. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Maturi Pavilion.
