2017-18 Freshman Season: Finished eighth in the 50-yard free (21.76) and sixth in the 100-yard fly (51.23) vs. Denver • took eighth in the 50-yard free (21.86) and fifth in the 100-yard fly (51.87) vs. Hawai'i and Drury • finished eighth in the 100-yard fly (50.12) at the Minnesota Invitational • took seventh in the 50-yard free (21.42) and seventh in the 100-yard fly (50.90) against Iowa • placed seventh in the 200-yard free (1:42.24), sixth in the 50-yard free (21.46), and seventh in the 100-yard fly (50.70) vs. Florida State.

High School: 2017 graduate of Lawrence Free State High School • coached by Annette McDonald  four-time letterwinner in swimming • four-time All-Conference, All-section, All-City, All-Area and All-State honoree • four-time NISCA All-American • three-time Kanas state Swimmer of the meet • holds school records in 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 200 free relay, 200 medley relay and 400 free relay • member of Lawrence Aquahawks • 2015 Montanat Swimmer of the Year. 

Personal: Born March 16, 1999 • son of Dorie and Tony Portela • has two siblings: Anthony and Chloe • mother Dorie and father Tony, swam at Alabama • brother Anthony and sister Chloe also swam for Minnesota  enjoys playing ultimate frisbee and disc golf • major is currently undecided.
