Bio
Tobias Wernet is in his first year as the team[apos]s Undergraduate Student Assistant Coach. He played tennis for the Golden Gophers from 2007 to 2011. He compiled an 86-40 singles record over his collegiate career and was an All-Big Ten honoree during his sophomore and senior seasons.
In 2007-08, he totaled a 17-8 singles record and a 7-3 Big Ten mark with wins in nine of last 11 matches. He also was named a Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree as a freshman. During his sophomore season he went 25-8 in singles and was named All-Big Ten after going 8-2 in conference play.
In 2009-10, he again was named a Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree and compiled a 20-14 in singles. His 20 wins tied for the team lead. Last year, Wernet was 24-10 and 8-2 in conference play as he was a unanimous selection to the All-Big Ten team. He was also named a Big Ten Sportsmanship Honoree for the third time.
Wernet was awarded with the Phil Brain Memorial award as the team[apos]s most valuable player in 2008 and 2011. He also was recognized with the Team Spirit award in 2008, 2009 and 2011.
Wernet was the ninth Gopher to receive the Phil Brain Memorial award twice. He is only the second player to win the award in non back-to-back years, joining Brian Uihlein who was named team MVP in 1989 and 1992. Wernet is only the second player to receive the Team Spirit three times, joining Rick Naumoff who won it in 1990, 1991 and 1992.
Wernet is an international business major.
