University of Minnesota tennis head coach Lois Arterberry has announced the addition of Steve Schram as assistant coach. Schram, who has 10 years head coaching experience, will begin his duties later this month.Â
"We are excited to add Steve to this program," Arterberry said. "Steve comes to Minnesota with an extensive resume as head coach and assistant coach at various levels. His level of experience is what this program needs at this time. Steve is passionate about tennis and the student athletes, and wants to see them succeed in all areas of their lives. I'm confident that Steve and I will work together to turn this program around and give the student athletes the level of commitment and student experience that they deserve. Welcome on board Steve."
Prior to his tenure at Minnesota, Schram was the head coach at Eastern Michigan University where the team went 6-9 in 2022-23. In his 10 years as a head coach, Schram holds a 126-58 collegiate coaching record. Before his time at EMU, Schram was the head coach at Southern Mississippi from 2018-22, where he held a 44-14 record. Schram was previously an assistant coach at Barry from 2016-18, and was responsible for on-court coaching, player development, recruiting and administrative duties. He helped Barry University capture the 2017 and 2018 Division II National Championship and was named the 2018 NCAA Division II National Assistant Coach of the Year, in addition to taking home the South Region Assistant Coach of the Year honor for the second straight season.
Schram spent three years as Nova Southeastern University's head coach from 2013-16. He guided the Sharks to a 46-19 record in three seasons, coached three All-Americans, 12 Scholar All-Americans, and nine All-Sunshine State Conference selections. Schram also led the Sharks to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009. He was named ITA South Region Coach of the Year, leading the team to as high as a No. 4 national ranking. Prior to Nova Southeastern, Schram spent two seasons as the head women's coach at Limestone College in 2011 and added the title of head men's and women's tennis coach in July 2013. From 2006-11, Schram was an assistant coach at Bucknell (2008-11), Radford (2007-08) and Wofford (2006-07).
Schram was also a collegiate tennis athlete. He began his career at the University of Charleston (W. Va.) in 2001-02 and transferred to Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Fla., the remainder of his career. During his time at FGCU, he lettered in each of his three seasons and helped the Eagles to a No. 9 national ranking in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll in 2005, and was named Most Improved in 2003. Schram earned his bachelor's degree in political science from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2006 and earned a master's of education degree in transformational leadership from Aspen University in 2012.
"First, I would like to thank Head Coach, Lois Arterberry and Assistant Athletic Director, Jenny Yehlen for this tremendous opportunity," Schram said. "It's a true honor to be a part of an elite institution that competes at the highest level in collegiate athletics. I am excited to work with Coach Arterberry, as we will work together in accomplishing program goals while ensuring that every student-athlete has the most positive and rewarding experience in their four years as a Gopher."
