ZHARINOV QUALIFIES FOR ALL-AMERICAN TOURNAMENT

University of Minnesota sophomore tennis player Aleksey Zharinov qualified for the main draw of the All-American Tournament in Atlanta, Ga. Zharinov defeated UAB's Andre van der Merve, 6-4, 7-5. The All- American Tournament runs from Oct. 11-14.

Zharinov lost in the final round of pre-qualifying on Monday after winning four consecutive matches. He received word that he was selected as a "lucky loser" just as he was preparing to board a plane back to Minneapolis. Zharinov then won two matches in the past two days to qualify for the main draw.

The native of Novosibirsk, Russia, native will join fellow Golden Gopher Thomas Haug in the tournament. Junior Harsh Mankad was scheduled to compete in the event as well, but will miss the tournament to participate in the Davis Cup. Mankad will compete for India in its match against the United States in Winston-Salem, N.C., Oct. 12-14.
